These words were spoken by Queen Elizabeth I in 1588 to her troops gathered at Tilbury at the Thames estuary, where they were expecting an invasion by the Spanish Armada. These words served as the motto for Tilbury House – a reminder that true strength lies not in circumstance, but in conviction and courage.
Tilbury House was the oldest and most prestigious English language debating society in Germany. It was founded in 1997 by Paul Drew-Bear as part of the American Management Seminars. For over 25 years, Tilbury House was entirely student-run – a testament to the dedication and passion of its members. The society concluded its activities in 2024.
In its final years, Tilbury House expanded its offer from Tuesday debate sessions to additional Workshop-Thursdays, held by experienced debater Helena Hecke. The society leaves behind a rich history of intellectual exchange and personal development for all who were part of it.
